Statement of Cora Martinez on the tragic passing of Laken Riley

Washington, D.C. March 13, 2024

On September 18, 2018, my daughter, Wendy Martinez, was brutally murdered when she went for a run after work. It was still daylight and the streets of Washington, D.C were bustling. Sadly, on February 22, 2024 another young woman, Laken Riley, was brutally murdered when she went for a run on her campus.

Wendy and Laken did nothing wrong. Yet they lost their life. We MUST come together to first acknowledge and to address this social problem, as women and girls live in fear of being victims themselves. Change starts with seeing the agonizing pain of the victims’ families and standing with them in their loss. It ends when we find solutions to make women safer and free to exercise without fear.

NOT TODAY | A Film By Runner's World

According to statistics, 84% of runners are harassed while on a run. Please watch this documentary: NOT TODAY was created by Runner’s World Magazine. It includes the tragic story of our beloved Wendy K. Martinez.

NOT TODAY examines the realities of that grim statistic—and the determination to change it—through the stories of three women who experienced violence while running. Mollie Tibbetts and Wendy Martinez were both killed, while Kelly Herron survived her encounter. Their tragic stories rippled through their families, friends, and even those who never knew them, leading ultimately beyond grief and fear to inspiration to make running safer for women.

Latinas in Tech

Another dream comes true. Last year, Wendy was approved to lead LIT chapter in DC, a non-profit organization that empowers professional women locally and internationally. This project had been in Wendy’s heart for a while.

The confirmation email came thru from Brenda BD Villanueva just an hour after Wendy passed.

Proud to announce that Wendy K. Martinez is now an honorary member of the DC chapter.

Much success to LIT in DC and thank you Fiscal Note for allowing the chapter to meet monthly at your HQ.

The Wendy Legacy Project will support the development and activities of this chapter.

Girls In Tech

We kicked off the Pillar with a partnership with Girls In Technology (GIT) DC. The partnership will expand the number of beneficiaries of the GIT's mentor-protégé program to girls in the DC and Virginia area interested in pursuing a career in technology.

The program helps girls identify pathways to careers in STEM through engagement with women executives in STEM-related fields in the DC and Virginia area. The picture below shows the first group of mentors receiving orientation as they prepare to inspire and guide a new generation of women tech leaders in the DC area.

Wendy believed in the importance of expanding the role of women in the technology industry.
